Water filters Ireland – Water in Ireland is rumoured to be the worst in Europe and has been described as the sewer of drinking water quality. But is the opinion that residents of Ireland have for their water quality justified? Is it true? Is Irish water quality so poor that there’s a need to buy a water filtration system for your home?
Is Ireland’s Drinking Water the Worst Tap Water in the EU?
Ireland is lagging behind most other European Union countries when it comes to clean drinking water.
Some 72.8 per cent of Irish drinking water were classified as excellent in the annual European drinking water quality report, compared with the EU average of 84.8 per cent.
Ireland was 22nd of the 30 countries ranked in the report. Water Filters Ireland have the best solutions for poor drinking water quality.
The European Commission sent a letter of formal notice to Ireland for allowing too much of the chemical Trihalomethane in public drinking water.
The chemical is a bi-product of when chlorine is used to disinfect and make water safe for drinking, and a build-up over a long period poses a risk to health.
The unsafe water is provided to over 500,000 people in Ireland, with the worst affected areas being Donegal, Kerry, and Wicklow.
The Commission warned that Ireland did not fulfil its obligations under the Drinking Water Directive, which aims to protect against the effects of any contamination of water intended for human consumption.
According to the commission: “The Irish authorities have not taken appropriate actions to bring down the value of THMs and to notify consumers of the health implications as required”.
Can You Drink Tap Water in Ireland?
If you live in a new building, the Irish water supply system delivers water virtually lead-free. ”Virtually” is not the same as having no lead and even ”lead-free” pipes can contain as much as 8% lead. But the situation with Irish drinking water in older buildings is more concerning. Untreated water can contain the following elements:
Lead is a toxic metal that causes long-term harm in adults but is especially harmful to pregnant women and children. It can affect brain development in children and cause many issues for the developing fetus.
Unfiltered, contaminated water can also contain cryptosporidium, which is very resistant to chlorine-based disinfectants. This pathogen has been observed and known to cause gastrointestinal and other infections.
Lastly, nitrates in drinking water have been linked to various adverse health outcomes, including colorectal cancer, thyroid disease, and neural tube defects.
What Types of Water Filtration Systems Can Help to Solve These Problems?
First, let’s examine the biggest complaints residents of Ireland had with drinking water quality:
Rusty brown color. While rusty or discoloured water will not be immediately harmful to your body, it is not the colour water is supposed to be. Chances are the rusty brown color is a result of corrosion in your building’s plumbing system, which is a very common problem in Ireland. For the time being, you can let the water run for some time to flush the particles out.
But there are many other factors that can cause your water to be discoloured. It could be nearby construction work, ground disturbance activities, repairs or replacement of broken pipes, etc. If the pressure or the water flow suddenly changes for any reason, it can cause iron and manganese particles to enter the stream.
Strange taste or odour. Irish drinking water is often affected by chlorine disinfection, which is a mandatory requirement by the Department of Environmental Protection. The warmer it gets, the more pronounced the smell of chlorine gets. One temporary way to resolve this problem is putting your glass or any container in the fridge overnight. But it is not something you can do regularly.
Even though chlorination is by far the most common method of disinfection, it has some disadvantages. They include the formation of byproducts and ineffectiveness against certain types of microbes. New techniques, materials, and methods have shown great potential as an alternative to chlorination, which we implement in our best water filtration systems for the home.
Cloudy water. During the time water is being transferred from the reservoirs to the cities and towns, the air gets trapped in the water. This doesn’t affect the water quality or your health. However, residents shouldn’t confuse air-related cloudiness with serious contamination. In any case, having clear water is preferable since you will be able to see any changes easily.
Now, what is the best water filtration system to solve these problems? Let’s see what type of water filters and purifiers are currently on the market:
Water filters Ireland jug. Even though it is not the most effective, it is the most popular filter. Typically, the reasons are the cost and portability. It uses an activated carbon filter to prevent the contaminants from flowing in the water. The water you pour into it goes through the filter where the contaminants are removed and the flows into the lower part for storage. Because of its minimal capacity, it has to be frequently refilled but may come in useful for picnics and brunch gin the garden.
Water filter system and tap. These filters are very affordable and require minimal maintenance. However, these two benefits come at the expense of efficiency. Plumbed in tap filters are installed directly on the faucet head and provide clean water straight away. If you live in an area where the water is already relatively clean, it is a great choice for the kitchen.
Shower head filter. As you might tell by the name, this device is installed straight on the shower head to filter the water locally in the shower. Shower head filters are very useful for areas and cities with so-called heavy water, containing high amounts of chlorine and fluoride. Studies show that these compounds negatively affect the health of your scalp and hair. So, having this type of filter is likely to improve both.
• Counter top water filter. If you don’t want to refill filter pitchers or jugs constantly, you might like the convenience of having a counter top filter. It is connected to the faucet and purifies water coming from the tap. The downside is that it takes up room on the counter top and thus, makes the space narrower.
Under-sink water filter. Similar to other options, these filters provide water on demand and do not need a storage tank or a connection to a drain. The advantages are that they are normally hidden in the cupboard and can process large volumes of water quickly. The downside is that they are large and not portable.
Full house water filter system. By deciding to invest in a full house water filter system, you get clean water coming from every tap of the home. If you want everything water-related to be healthier, such as cooking, laundry, showers, and drinking, you can confidently go for this type of filtration system.
Your home should be the safest place in the world, and it would be unfair if that safety was compromised every time you come into contact with water. We have already discussed the danger of untreated water, so you realise that the stakes are high. A water filtration system for the home is a valuable purchase beyond measure. Since it is placed on the main water line entering your house, every drop of water coming into your home will be clean. Water that is free from rust, sediment, chlorine, and other chemical contaminants makes for a great investment in a healthy future.
Besides, clean water will also keep your existing house appliances running for as long as possible. Dishwashers, water heaters, and washing machines often break because of harsh water. So, after proper water filtration, contaminants will not enter these devices. Thus, they will work efficiently for a lot longer. That makes this purchase even more cost-efficient.

Samsung Fridge Filter 101 – The Basics
Why Do I Need To Change My Water Filter In The First Place?
Water filters ensure safe drinking water for families, and like every other home, gadgets need to be changed from time to time. But why is this change necessary? I give you some reasons why you need to change your water filter
For a better water void of taste and smell
To expel sediments and fine particles from drinking water
To avoid absorption of toxic substances into the water due to weak filter function
To maintain average water pressure in your dispenser
How Do Refrigerator Water Filters Work?
Water filters act as a screen that removes toxic contaminants from your water supply. The water runs through it during the dispensing process from the exterior surface through to the center of the cartridge. This is where the carbon block is situated and the germs trapped. They act as cleansers not just for your water dispenser but also for the ice maker.
What Happens If I Don’t Change My Fridge Filter?
I get it; you may be tempted to use your fridge filter for as long as you can, as long as the water tastes good. A lot of folks would do the same.
But then, it may not be a good idea as many of the contaminants are “tasteless”.
Slow discharge from the water fountain, not enough ice is made. It is the precise function of the filter to retain “debris” and release fresh water. Over time debris builds up inside the filter and makes it harder for water to flow.
Potential Growth Of Bacteria: As particals are collected inside the filter the environment can turn into a petri dish.
Filter will start letting contminants flow through: IWhen the pores of your filter are blocked with tiny particles, the pressure of the water will force some of these particles and contaminants into your water. You know what that means, right? Your water will no longer be safe for drinking.
How Often Do I Need To Change The Water Filter?
It’s not wrong to change your water filter a few times a year. As long as you can afford it, you can change it as often as you can. This is because most filters are made of carbon blocks, which accumulate microorganisms over a period of time.
If you can’t change it numerous times a year, at least ensure you change it every six months. Most filters are built to sieve a maximum of 300 gallons of water, which would practically take six months of home usage.
Any filter used for more than six months or above the stipulated volume of water will put you at risk of drinking contaminated water.
How Do I Save Money On Water Filters?
Water filters come mostly in a pack of one, and continually buying in this manner will not be cost-efficient. Samsung water filters have some subscription services that help to reduce the costs. Moreover, there is a significant discount when you purchase the 2-pack or 3-pack water filter.
Why Use Genuine Filters?
Samsung Genuine Water filters are guaranteed to reduce contaminants, and also they tested and certified by NSF/ANSI. Furthermore, genuine water filters assure you the best fit for your refrigerator models. Third-party filters most times don’t fit even when it matches the model.
The best way to ascertain the ingenuity of your water filter is as follows:
Find the authentication tag at the back of the filter and tear it out.
A magnet is provided in the filter pack; place the authentication tag over the magnet.
If it shows green stripes, then it’s genuine, but if it doesn’t, you should visit your filter provider.
Are There Any Reputable Third Party Manufacturers Of Filters?
Aqua Filter Warehouse makes water filters that are compatible with most models of Samsung refrigerators. They also have the NSF 53 and 42 certifications that are similar to Samsung water filters. Also, water filters from G.E, Frigidaire, Propur, and Premium are also reputable and certified. Samsung Fridge filters.
What Governing Body Sets Standards for Water Filters?
If you look around your water filter carefully, you will find a logo on it that bears the abbreviation, NSF.
It’s the standard logo of the National Sanitation Foundation, an international body that is concerned with the development of various public health standards and certifications for the production of food, water, and consumer products.
That logo proves that your water filter has been tested and approved to have met certain requirements. NSF has different standards with different codes. Most common standards that apply to residential water filters are as follows:
NSF 42 means your filter has been certified to reduce chlorine taste and odor particulate class.
NSF 53 means your filter is certified to remove lead, cysts, mercury, benzene, and endrin. All of them are contaminants that pose health hazards as regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
NSF 401 means your water filter is certified to remove contaminants from pharmaceutical residue and chemical depositions. They include Atenolol, Estrone, Linuron, Trimethoprim.

Firstly, this blog post is not to criticise Irish Water or any group scheme provider in the county of Dublin. We’re a small water treatment company based in Dublin 3 and have seen it all when it comes to water filtration and water quality issues around the country.
Apart from the elephant in the room that is, Fluoride, the water quality in Dublin produced by the treatment plants is pretty good. Yes, we had a severe boil water notice in effect recently but overall, the water treatment network has a very good record with minimal disruption to the end user.
All that said, there are housing estates in Dublin with drinking water that has the highest levels of Lead content ever seen in this country. As much as everyone would love to blame Irish Water for this, the responsibility is actually down to the home owner to rectify this severe problem.
Why is it MY Responsibility?
Dublin City Council & now Irish Water have taken significant steps over the past few years to improve the water pipe network across the county. Chances are, if an old Lead pipe is leeching poisonous lead into your drinking water, it’s possibly located under your front garden and this is absolutely not the responsibility of Irish Water. There are grants to have the pipe work replaced but it’s still quite expensive. €3000+. Take you and your families health seriously, take action to fix the problem yourself if you can.
Other Issues That Effect My Drinking Water in Dublin
More often than not, when we visit our customers to replace their water filters, they’re shocked at the state of the old cartridges. Sediment, sand and other gloopy substances stick to the outer core of the cartridge. While it’s possible for dirty water to enter the home from outside, the actual cause of the disgusting looking filters is normally from old corroded pipe work installed in the house. Usually old copper pipes will begin to deteriorate and cause issues for the water filter system.
Limescale in North Dublin is another major issue for residents. The problems can range from dry skin, faulty home appliances to electric showers breaking down or heating elements packing in. If you’re unsure as to whether you have hard water or not, open your kettle and look inside. If you can see a white chalk residue, you have limescale. This will eventually give you grief somewhere in the near future.
What Can I do to Solve These Problems?
We have a range of water filter systems for our customers suffering with poor water quality in Dublin.
For the removal of Lead and all other impurities from your drinking water only, we highly recommend a 5 Stage Reverse Osmosis System. This provides water quality which surpasses any bottled water.
“I have limescale in my entire home, what can you offer me?” We have the highest quality water softeners & limescale protection systems in the country. Please check out our range here
