How Can Hard Water Affect Your Skin & Health 5 points

How Can Hard Water Affect Your Skin & Health

Did you know that over 75% percent of Irish households are living with the detrimental effects of hard water caused by excessive minerals which are present in their mains water supply?.  If you, like many of us, live in an area where limescale is an issue, then you’ve likely noticed unsightly spots or streaks on your sink & glassware. Not only that but scale residue on your taps and worktops, or annoying soap residue stuck to your shower door from mineral deposits. As time passes, the excessive calcium & magnesium build ups can cause plumbing problems and damage to your domestic appliances.

It’s true, hard water is absolutely safe to drink, most people find that the limescale which is affecting their home can also have a negative effect on their health and appearance of their skin & hair. Do you have blonde hair? Does your water turn your hair green? YIKES!

The Connection Between Hard Water and Your Skin Health

When groundwater travels through limestone, it will normally attract varying amounts of calcium and magnesium. Obviously, it depends on where you live but your water may also contain manganese, or iron. The calcium content in hard water affects the breakdown of soap, cleansers, shampoo, and detergents. Instead of washing away cleanly, a large proportion of soap scum etc. can be left behind, potentially irritating your skin, particularly if you’re prone to eczema. If you’ve been washing your clothes, showering, or bathing in hard water, you will be quite familiar with the following issues:

  1. Feeling a rough like residue on your skin after a hot shower
  2. Negative effects on your dyed hair (especially if it’s blonde)
  3. Rough dry or “frizzy hair”
  4. An itchy flakey scalp
  5. Skin irritation or rashes. Inflammation of eczema.

When living in an area with harsh limescale, you will notice that you need to use a lot more shampoo or soap than normal to generate a sufficient lather. You will end up using a lot more product as a direct result of having a hard water mains supply.

Skin Conditions Triggered or Inflamed by Hard Water

The same residue that ruins your sink, taps and glassware etc. also has a similar penetrative affect on your skin. Calcium & Magnesium will dry out the natural oils of your skin and can cause an awful amount of irritation and damage to what would normally be, healthy skin. If your household appliances are suffering with the effects that come with hard water, you may want to consider how the mineral content of your mains water could be affecting the appearance of your skin. Here’s some of the main issues caused by limescale in the water supply

Elevated Irritation and Flaking

The moisture on your skin forms a protective layer against dryness, irritation, inflammation and infection. Even though most people experience incidents of skin dehydration during the winter time, a large percentage of people that are forced to use hard water have dry, flaky skin year-round. That’s a direct result of excessive minerals on the outer layer of the skin, absorbing moisture as lingering soap residue messes with your skin’s natural pH balance. More often than not, using moisturizers won’t be enough to remedy the problems.

Aggravated Eczema Flares

Flare-ups may be devastating and feel painful and uncomfortable. Hard water can trigger Atopic dermatitis and it often requires daily attention to keep flare-ups under control, though for some this may not be enough.

Atopic dermatitis can be frustrating and embarrassing and may result in self-consciousness about appearance; symptoms of anxiety also have been reported in people with atopic dermatitis. If your skin issues have been aggravated by your water supply, we would recommend a whole house water softener to remove 100% of the hardness from the mains. A soft water remedy like no other

Accelerated Signs of Skin Aging

It’s a factor in many skincare issues and dehydrated skin is no different. As your skin begins to get older, you may find it more difficult to maintain moisture levels.

The ageing process makes our bodies more dehydrated, including the skin. Structural changes associated with the ageing process cause more dehydration. It can create a slow-down of cell turnover.

And when skin becomes dehydrated, it can start to look older, too. Dehydrated skin will have a rough-feeling texture, with fine lines becoming more prominent.

Testing Your Water For Limescale. Hard Water Testing

Easiest Ways to Test for Hard Water

There are 3 cheap & easy ways you can test for hard water at home. We will explain the methods below so you know for sure if you have hard or soft water. (Quick tip – Have a look in your kettle and inspect for calcium deposits 🙂 ) But for the sake of this quick article, lets have a look at some other methods.

What is Hard Water?

Hardness is a natural characteristic of much of Ireland’s drinking supply. Hard water contains high levels of natural minerals absorbed from rock and soil. It is not harmful to your health, in fact, the higher the mineral content (such as Calcium & Magnesium) may confer health benefits above that of soft water.

1. Check Your Water Utilities Website

The first method is to go online and check with your local water supplier. For example, check Irish Waters dedicated link here to check your address for hard water . They provide an annual Water Quality Report that is available for anybody to read upon request. If you have a private well supply, read below for some at home water testing methods.

2. In-Home Water Test

You can test for hard water in your home by taking a clean and clear bottle. Fill one-third of the bottle with tap water. Then, pour a few drops of pure Castile liquid soap into the bottle and shake vigorously. This liquid can be bought online for under a fiver on sites like the one listed here. Make sure you use pure liquid soap because it doesn’t contain additives that will create suds in hard water.

If you have soft water, which hopefully you do, your bottle should still be filled a third of the way with water and two-thirds filled with bubbles from the soap.

If you have hard water, the water in the bottle will be cloudy and there will be a thin layer of tiny bubbles.

3. Titrant Hard Water Test Kit

To find out how hard your water is exactly, you’ll need a liquid test kit (drop kit). You can order a Titrant water test kit from ourselves for only €20. To place your order, click here and fill out the form.

In the box, you will have a test tube and bottle of green Titrant liquid.  Simply fill the test tube with 5ml of cold water and then add 10 drops of liquid into the test tube and give it a swirl. If the liquid turns red, this means your water is hard. To determine how hard the water actually is, continue to add drops (keep count) and when the liquid eventually turns dark green, refer to the chart in the package for an explanation on the result. You can then contact us to discuss an appropriate water softening treatment package to remedy the issue.

We would be delighted to discuss your water softening & filtration requirements. Feel free to call us on 01-6877117 if you have any questions!

Water Hardness And Why You Need to Eliminate It

Water Hardness

So, you bought yourself a new dress and wore it at a party. With all the compliments you are receiving in the dress, you are quite proud of wearing it. You go home and think of washing it and pack it in the closet. After washing you notice that the dress has lost its luster and looks ordinary. What do you think happened? The water you washed it in was hard water and it is solely responsible for ruining the quality of the dress. The hard water is full of a certain component known as lime scale.

Lime scale Explained in Detail

Lime scale is produced when hard water is boiled above 51°C. Also, when it gets evaporated on facades such as faucets and showerheads, lime scale starts forming. Lime scale makes water hard and carries high amounts of calcium and magnesium ions.

These minerals are hard and filled with calcium and magnesium carbonate, are what accelerate out of hard water to develop lime scale. Hence, to refine or eliminate limescale, we require something that will dissolve or diminish both carbonates out of the water.

Certain acids tend to dissolve anything it comes in contact with. Here is the following list of acids that will dissolve lime scale in a jiffy.

1) Citric acid

One of the acids that clean the lime scale is citric acid. It is present to some degree in all citrus fruits. Lemons are a great example as it owns the highest concentration. Lemon juice is better than vinegar and is capable of leaving a present smell. One way to defeat this problem is to dip a cloth in lemon juice, cover it around the tap and leave overnight.

2) Acetic acid

One of the best examples of acetic acids is vinegar. Often found in every home these days. It diminishes the lime scale easily. If you want to remove lime scale out of your kettle, mix a cup of water with vinegar. Boil the solution and keep it overnight. The next day cleans the kettle and it will be as good as new. Also, if you want to clean the showerheads, soaking it in the solution of vinegar will be of great help.

3) Lactic acid

Lactic acid is also known as milk acid is often used as a good lime scale remover. The formation of lactic acid is derived from lactose, often found in milk. It is broken down by bacteria and is especially found in sour milk. However, it is not recommended by any expert to remove water hardness with sour milk. But it is a great solution to clean kettles, coffee machines and home irons.

4) Sulphamic acid

Sulphamic acid is generally utilized in industrial lime scale cleaning products. It is considered the less hazardous option comparatively to hydrochloric acid. But it is an effective solution to remove lime scale from your daily use equipment.

There is a list of acids that may not be suitable for everyone and can be quite hazardous. But there is an option that can save you all kinds of hassles and that is a water softening system. One of the best water softening systems is Acqua Brevetti MiniDUE Liquid Water Softener

The water softening system restores the calcium and magnesium contents in hard water by sodium. Sodium does not grow in pipes and also is non-reactive to all kinds of soaps. The source of the water softening system is not tough to understand. When the hard water enters the water softener, a sheet of plastic beads and in some cases, the element used is known as Zeolite. The element present inside the water softener is merged with sodium ions. Then sodium is replaced and comes in contact with hard water, calcium, and magnesium. As soon as the water is dispersed out of the softener, the water is known as the soft water type. Soft water is the purest and does not contain any kind of impurities at all.

Limescale Effects And Why People Should Install A Water Softener Today!

Water is life! And we all believe water has amazing power which keeps us alive and healthy at all times. Without water, you would face serious consequences regarding health. The following is a quick blog post on hard water and the effects it has on your appliances, heating system and showers/baths etc. Many households across Europe suffer with limescale issues and it’s only when their expensive boiler or shower breaks down that they decide to take action.

By installing a water softening system in your home, it will completely resolve your hard water problems. Installing a water softener which is capable of preventing the development of lime-scale on shower accessories and in water faucets will be the best investment you could make. There is always a reason for installing a water softening system.

Hard water is not easy to identify but it’s leftover sign is not difficult to notice. Water is almost full of important minerals but the excess of magnesium and calcium will leave a mark on anything it comes in contact with. After cleaning the dishes, you will notice a pale white or yellowish color on your kitchenette and lavatory faucets. Also, after a while, they will start getting accumulated on the shower heads.

Now, as the lime-scale starts to build-up, it can clog nearly every kitchen/bathroom appliances in your house. If you do not believe us, check your coffee maker or water heater for a white substance accumulating around the corners. If you neglect the white or yellow substance, it can result in high costs of repairing or replacement jobs. Furthermore, you can also notice a white buildup of your beer mugs, crystal clear glasses, and porcelain; these are just a few examples.

Water softener systems work by using a method known as ion exchange. It will replace calcium and magnesium ions that are responsible for the cause of water hardness with sodium ions. These softening systems consist of resin beads that carry out the ion exchange process.

Why Does Water Need To Be Softened And Why It Is Important?

  • Hard water is not responsible for causing any kind of health issues apart from kidney stones. But it can become a grave concern in terms of the condition of water appliances. The build up of limescale can also ruin your plumbing system in general and clog copper pipes etc.
  • Also, lime-scale accumulation in a plumbing system is capable of obstructing water flow to the faucets. Moreover, it also decreases the effectiveness of bath and washing soap by making it difficult for them to fully dissolve in the water. Particles of the soap connect to minerals and form residue, which can ravage the clothing fiber. If the water is hard, soap will not dissolve and you need to add a little extra which is ineffective anyway.
  • The lime-scale accumulation, if left unchecked can cause harm to all faucets and water-dependent appliances. It is surely easier to limit the development of lime-scale than face its outgrowths. A water softening system can determine the hard water dilemma and convert the hard water into soft water easily and effectively.

Benefits Of Installing A Water Softening System:

  • Installing a water softening system is capable of improving your soap and detergent effectiveness of cleaning your clothes without damaging the fiber.
  • The life of a daily-use appliance is extended. Also, a water softening system is significant to fancy appliances. Limescale has caused damage to water-using appliances, which is going to increase the cost of repairs.
  • Also, appliances which are full of lime-scale accumulation may use up more power. It will increase your energy bills and your equipment will become inefficient and eventually break down.
  • Soft water is soothing on your hair and skin. Also, it is safe to use in washing clothes. As there is no hard water present, detergent has increased efficiency of keeping your cleaner and brighter.

There are several reasons why you should avoid using hard water. If you are now convinced why your clothes are not shiny and why you are losing hair luster, installing a water softening system can be a blessing to you and your family.
